Smaller gyms will give you a better chance of customizing your workout. If you don’t feel like lifting today, you may be able to join a fitness or aerobics class. Bigger gyms may offer a cookie-cutter type of workout, which may not be as effective for one as it is for others.

Another one of the most complained-about things in a big gym chain is the contracts. You will have to comply with a list of rules that seem to be ever-changing. A smaller gym will go with what is best for the gym-goer and not for the enterprise.

Lastly, the type of community you will find in smaller local gyms is like no other. The people who frequent these gyms have formed friendships and see each other when they work out. The type of community you will join in a smaller gym is a much warmer one than what you might find in a big gym chain.

While it may be true that you might be able to find cheaper monthly rates at bigger gym chains. Also, you may argue that there is a wider range of shiny gym equipment that can be found in big chains. However, the advantages of these larger chains seem to end there. You may soon find out that smaller local gyms have much more to offer than what first meets the eye.
